The Pentagon has announced that about 500 US troops committed suicide in 2019, most of whom were young, enlisted white men, according to its annual suicide report released Oct. 1. guns played a role in most of those incidents.

US military ground and air force officials have warned that the outbreak of the Coronavirus has added to the pressure and anxiety on the US military.

James A. Helis, a US military official, said that  Post-coronavirus quarantine, financial and livelihood problems, and children's distance education are among the issues that have suddenly come under increasing pressure on the US military and their families.

According to the United States Department of Defense (DOD) data on uniformed personnel, the Air Force lost 111 members to suicide in 2019, an increase of about 38 percent over 2018. Its suicide rate neared 26 incidents per 100,000 troops in the Active component; the report did not provide rates for the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

Research shows that the presence and participating in multiple operations, stress, abuse of prescriptions, drug and alcohol use, and financial problems have all contributed to the increase in US military self-inflicted injuries.
