The mourning ceremony of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shi'a Imam was held throughout the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir.

Iran PressAsia: Residents of the Indian-controlled Kashmir region mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) while observing health protocols.

India has been occupying parts of Kashmir for years, deploying thousands of troops, and killing tens of thousands over the past three decades.

The people of Kashmir are calling for the implementation of a long-approved UN Security Council resolution on holding a referendum to determine the status of the region, but the Indian government has always opposed the move.Black flags of mourning have been hoisted all over the roads of the Indian-controlled Kashmir region, and large gatherings and marches continue despite restrictions made by the Indian military.

Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of the Shias of the world along with his faithful companions were martyred in Karbala, Iraq, on the 10th of Muharram in the year 61 AH, by the then-tyrant Yazid, the son of Muawiyah.

Imam Hussein (AS) taught the lesson of freedom and dignity to all the world with his unique sacrifice in Karbala.

Imam Hussain (AS) is the symbol of resistance against oppression. The choice made by Imam Hussein (AS) and his small group of family members and companions (AS), has been a source of inspiration for not just Muslims but for all of humanity, throughout history.

Muslims usually stage mourning ceremonies in commemoration of Ashura (the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram) that marks the martyrdom anniversary of the icon of sacrifice to the faithful, Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam.

Ashura is the culmination of a 10-day annual mourning period in the lunar month of Muharram for Imam Hussein, who was a grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and was martyred along with 72 of his family members and companions in 680 AD in a land that is known today as Iraq, after they refused to pledge allegiance to the ruler of the time, Yazid.

The Battle of Karbala between a small group of supporters and relatives of Imam Hussein (AS) and a larger military detachment from the forces of the caliph represents a war between good and evil.
