Mashad (IP) - The mourning rituals of Muharram in 1442 Islamic lunar year in the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Imam of the Shias in Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan Razavi province, northeastern Iran has begun in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic and in accordance with health protocols.

Iran Press/Iran news: The golden dome and other parts of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS), as well as the surrounding streets leading to the holy shrine and the city of Mashad, are covered in black.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, mourning ceremonies for the months of Muharram and Safar will be held outdoors in shrines, streets, parks, schools, and stadiums, in accordance with health protocols and social distancing.

5,431 religious mourning groups have been registered in Khorasan Razavi province. These days, in addition to Iranian pilgrims, Mashad hosts a limited number of pilgrims from other Islamic countries, including Afghanistan.
