Tehran (IP) - US President Donald Trump needs to negotiate with Iran to win the upcoming presidential election, a member of the Iranian parliament's presiding board said.

Iran Press/Iran News: In an exclusive interview with Iran Press on the sidelines of an open session of the parliament on Sunday, Ahmad Amirabadi-Farahani, elaborated on the US' aim to activate trigger mechanism.

The US President tries to establish a relationship with Iran in the coming months to influence Americans' minds and wins the upcoming election, he said.

The US trying to use 'snapback'

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has denounced the US attempts to invoke the Iran Nuclear Deal’s trigger mechanism, also known as the “snapback” mechanism.

The mechanism will unilaterally reinstate sanctions on Tehran - a move with enormous repercussions for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“American snapback is illegal and unacceptable, and the Americans know they cannot use snapback,” Zarif said during a ceremony in the capital Tehran on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump pledged Saturday to use the technique, a day after the UN Security Council overwhelmingly rejected an American resolution to extend an Iranian arms embargo.

"We'll be doing a snapback," Trump said during a news conference at his New Jersey golf club. "You'll be watching it next week."

"Snapback” was envisioned in the event Iran was proven to violate the 2015 nuclear deal.

Trump pulled out of the agreement, known as the JCPOA, in 2018. But the US circulated a six-page memo Thursday from State Department lawyers, claiming that the United States remained part of the 2015 Security Council resolution that endorsed the deal and still had the right to use the snapback provision.

The US is not able to activate the trigger mechanism, and they have failed in creating international consensus in this regard, added Amirabadi-Farahani.

“What we see today is the result of Iran's resistance, and it proves Iran's proper situation and the presence of the resistance groups in the region,” he said.

The MP went on to say that although the US sanctions exerted pressure on Iran, the Americans have not achieved their goal, adding: “It shows that Iran's economic foundation is so robust and the financial situation is getting better soon.”

"I do not believe that they even think about activating trigger mechanism since their attitude toward Iran affects voters' opinion,” he noted.
