The Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between Iraq and Turkey on travel visas between the two countries.

Iran PressMiddle East: Under a 2009 agreement between Turkey and Iraq, the two sides agreed that Iraqi and Turkish citizens would be allowed to travel through the border without a visa or the need to go to an embassy or consulate.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry suspended the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, stating that what led to the suspension of the MoU was its non-implementation by Turkey; thus, the Iraqi government had reciprocally suspended it on the basis of the principle of retaliation.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has asked its embassy in Turkey to inform Ankara of Baghdad's decision.

"Despite this decision, talks are continuing to re-implement the agreement," the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said.
