Thousands of Australians have rallied to show solidarity and support for US protesters in following the murder of a black man by US police.

Iran PressAsia: Thousands of Australians protested on Saturday in solidarity and support for the US protesters following the death of a black man at the hands of US police, ignoring restrictions due to Coronavirus and police warnings.

More than 5,000 Australians took to the streets this morning in Brisbane ignoring curfew restrictions and police warnings of fines for violating social distancing rules while wearing masks on their faces carrying placards written on them "Black life is important".

The protest follows the assassination of George Floyd, a black American in Minneapolis, by a white American officer who put his knee on his throat for 9 minutes to die. Demonstrations are also set to take place in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart.

As tensions rose sharply in the major American cities after days of mostly peaceful protests, prominent Democratic politicians on Friday accepted the slogan of nationwide protests and announced reforms.

Australians also used their protests to call for an end to police abuse of Indigenous Australians. Many protesters in Brisbane hoisted indigenous flags around them.
