American Law professor, Wendy Parmet

Wendy E. Parmet, the Professor of Law at Northeastern University School of Law and Director of Program on Health Policy and Law says that there is no 'Public Health System' in the US, but it only has 'Health Industry' that the Government has little or no role in it.

Iran PressAmerica: The Coronavirus Crisis in the United States once again raises the question of what a good a government looks like? Basically, what is a government or what should it be? Is the government allowed to interfere in the public and private lives of its citizens? And if so, to what extent?

In an exclusive interview with ILNA, Wendy Parmet, director of the Center for Health Policy and Law at Northeastern University believes that the general public perception of freedom in the US means doing whatever you want and therefore, the order to 'stay at home' is considered a serious threat to this maximum and absolute freedom and try to defy it.

According to the professor of Northeastern University, With the spread of Corona-related deaths, governments will have no choice but to pursue strict policies like public lockdown. This makes some people oppose any restrictive order, including 'stay at home'.

"By calling to stop or reduce restrictive measures, it is also possible that someone like Donald Trump, who is seeking to buy the people's vote, wants to falsely place himself in the ranks of the Liberals. In fact, the American people's problem is the originality of the freedom and that is at its maximum freedom, and no one can reduce its degree, and for such an idea, the stay at home order means: be silence, don't work, don't buy weapons, and that means restricting freedom," said Wendy Parmet, director of the Center for Health Policy and Law at Northeastern University.

Parmet went on saying: "Most people today believe that their health and well-being depend on their own choices. In this context of the idea, there is no such thing as a Public Health System. What exists are large pharmaceutical factories and highly developed medical technologies," adding that: "The government is not doing anything and in fact, not only does not do anything, it is not capable to do anything because the government has delegated all his authority from the very beginning."

The professor believes that in the meantime, the government in the US is just an observer or, at the best, is the part of the medical system in the country. In fact, it is a mistake to think that the system is based on the free market economy. The economy itself is based on a more complex and fundamental concept: American freedom. This is what the American Foundation and the American citizen are all about. 212/ 207
