Security Council has no plan to extend Iran arms embargo

Sven Jorgensen held a virtual press conference on Friday to explain the Security Council's plans in May stating there is no plan to extend Iran's arms embargo

Iran PressAmerica: The current president of the United Nations Security Council, Sven Jürgenson  So far, no request has been made for a meeting on Iran, but it is possible that any member of the Security Council will request an additional meeting at any time.

In this regard, he was asked if the United States had such a right using  Resolution 2231 to implement trigger mechanism and restore previous Security Council resolutions against Iran, Svenson said: "This is a legal issue which is currently under investigation by lawyers."

Estonia's permanent representative to the United Nations, who chairs the Security Council this month, continued: "We are in close contact with our counterparts, including the United States. No plan has been submitted yet; however, we are aware of the New York Times article in this regard."

In response to a question about Estonia's position on extending or ending Iran's arms embargo, he said: "I do not want to go into details about Estonia's position before the talks. But Estonia, as a member of the European Union, strongly supports the continuation of the JCPOA ."

The US officials have said in a new statement that they have the right to use what they call their legal right to extend Iran's arms embargo as members of UNSCR 2231 or the UN Security Council.

Iran has vehemently rejected this self-proclaimed interpretation of the United States, stressing that the United States has ended its participation in the JCPOA  in accordance with its President's explicit statement.
