Worldwide, there are now more than 1.6 million confirmed cases of coronavirus but from that number close to 354,000 have already recovered and death toll inches closer to 100,000.

Iran Press/America: In the United States, the death toll has surpassed 16,500. As of Thursday afternoon, more than 151,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus discovered in New York. At least 7,000 people with COVID-19 have died in the state, which has the largest number around 35 percent of confirmed cases in the US.

Nationwide, more than 432,500 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed across all 50 states. At least 14,830 people have died from the virus in the country, where 10 states have confirmed more than 10,000 cases. 

Some 450 inmates and staff have tested positive for coronavirus in the US city of Chicago's largest jail, county corrections officials said, representing one of the nation's largest outbreaks of the respiratory illness at a single site so far in the pandemic.

In the United Kingdom, the death toll rose by 881 in 24 hours, officials said on Thursday, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson was moved out of intensive care but remained in hospital.

Meanwhile, Spain reported 683 additional deaths, a lower number compared to the previous two days.

The Italian government is planning to extend its lockdown to contain the country's COVID-19 outbreak until May 3. The total number of confirmed cases in Italy rises to 143,626, while the death toll rises by 610 to a total of 18,279.

China on Friday reported 42 new cases, 38 of them imported, along with one additional death in the hardest-hit city of Wuhan.

Another 1,169 suspected cases or those who tested positive but were not showing symptoms, were being monitored under isolation. China now has reported a total of 81,907 cases and 3,336 deaths from the virus. More than 77,000 of those who were infected have recovered.

Turkey's health ministry said the country's death toll rose to 908 after 96 more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours due to the virus.

The ministry added that 4,056 new cases have been confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 42,282.

South Korea has reported 27 new cases of the coronavirus, marking its ninth consecutive day below 100, as infections continue to wane in the worst-hit city of Daegu.

Figures released by South Korea's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday brought nationwide totals to 10,450 cases and 208 virus-related deaths, the Associated Press reported.

The number of cases in Canada increased to 19,774, up from 18,447 the day before, according to data provided by the public health agency. The number of deaths increased to 461.

The Netherlands reported 1,213 coronavirus cases, taking the total to 21,762, health authorities said, with 148 new deaths.

Russia reported a record one-day rise in cases of a novel coronavirus, pushing the official tally to more than 10,000, a day after President Vladimir Putin said the coming weeks would prove decisive in the fight against the virus.

The number of cases jumped by 1,459 and 13 more people died, the national coronavirus crisis response center said on its website. That brings the overall death toll to 76.
