Coronavirus death toll in Europe exceeds 5,000

More than 5,000 people across Europe have been killed because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to an AFP tally on Friday based on official sources.

Iran Press/Europe: In total, there were 5,168 deaths across the continent, mostly in Italy which is now the hardest-hit country in the world with 3,405 fatalities.

Europe registered 1,034 news cases in the past 24 hours, for a total of 110,568 infections, according to the tally compiled at 1100 GMT, AFP reported.

The new respiratory virus, known officially as COVID-19, has spread to every continent except Antarctica as well as every single European country.

There are at least 246,799 diagnosed cases globally and at least 10,063 deaths, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Over 86,000 people with diagnosed cases have recovered.
