Tehran (IP) - Iranian people correctly recognize that they are the main owners of the country and the government, Iran's Minister of Energy told the Iran Press correspondent before casting his vote in the 11th parliamentary and the 5th midterm Assembly of Experts' elections.

Iran Press/Iran news: "The sanctions imposing on us also is the result of this recognition," Reza Ardakanian said before casting his vote in the ballot box at the Lorzade Mosque of Tehran on Friday.

Energy Minister said that until 50 years ago, governments had been changed by a phone call or were forced to arrange meetings of ambassadors.

"That time the people were not counted and now the people are in the core of the ownership of the country," he added.

Ardakanian underlined that putting pressure on the people is the only way left for the enemies to make a change.

"The Iranian nation came on the streets on the national day of 11th of February (22 Bahman) to safeguard the whole Islamic Republic and today they are coming in all cities in poll stations for the national election and shaping the new parliament that has a big power on not only making laws but also evaluating and observing the executive activities of the government," he said.

Polling stations in 207 constituencies across Iran opened at 8:00 am local time. After the polls close, counting will begin straight away.

Nearly 58 million people are eligible to vote on preselected lists of candidates in Iran's 11th parliamentary elections.

The Iranian Parliament, officially known as the Islamic Consultative Assembly, is a 290-seat legislative body with 207 constituencies. Its members are elected every four years, and former and current members can be re-elected.

On the other hand, the Assembly of Experts of the Leadership is a deliberative body of 88 theologians tasked with choosing the Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Members of the Assembly are elected every eight years.
