Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang has called on the signatories to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran to abide by their obligations under the deal after the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 and illegally re-imposed sanctions on Tehran.

Iran PressIran news: "The Iranian nuclear issue has come to a critical stage. China maintains close communication with other parties to the JCPOA on upholding and implementing the deal," he told reporters on Tuesday.

Geng was responding to reports that the Joint Commission of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will hold a meeting on December 6 in Vienna with the participation of delegates from Iran, China, Russia, Germany, France, and the UK.

"We will attend the upcoming Joint Commission meeting," he replied to a question on who from the Chinese side will attend this meeting.

Asked what Beijing expects from the upcoming meeting, the Chinese official said, "full and effective implementation of the JCPOA is the only viable way to ease tensions over the Iranian nuclear issue."

One year after the US withdrawal, Iran in 2019 started incremental reduction of its commitments under the nuclear agreement as the European side had failed to implement its obligations toward Iran under US pressure.

"We hope this meeting will help all parties consolidate the political consensus of upholding the JCPOA, work out fulfillment issues through consultation, and explore effective means of implementation, in particular with regards to restoring the balance of rights and obligations of all parties," said Geng.
