At least one person was killed and several others wounded after the Nigerian police used live ammunition to break up a religious meeting of senior cleric Sheik Ibrahim Zakzaky's supporters.

Iran PressAfrica: Supporters of the General Secretariat of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria were targeted by security forces during a rally on the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Local media reports witnesses confirmed that the police attacked the participants in an unprovoked attack and opened fire at them.

The office of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaki announced in a message on his Twitter page that the Nigerian security forces attacked on Sheikh Zakzaki's supporters on the anniversary of the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) resulting to one killed and several injured.

IMN holds annual processions on the anniversary in an effort to lay the ground for stronger unity and solidarity among Muslims and provide solutions for their problems.

Nigeria has been cracking down on the IMN for several years.

Sheikh Zakzaky has been in detention since December 2015 after his home in Zaria was brutally raided by Nigerian forces, during which he was beaten and lost his left eye.
