Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif (R) and German counterpart Heiko Maas (L) after their meeting in Teheran, Iran, June 10, 2019

The German Foreign Ministry has described US sanctions on Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, as inaccurate emphasizing that Germany will continue its diplomatic dealings and contacts with Zarif.

Iran Press/Europe: The German foreign minister, Heiko Maas in an interview with Dutche Welle said: "The US action was a rejection of diplomatic solutions and therefore Berlin did not consider it appropriate."

He also said: "German, French, and British foreign ministers are in regular contact with Javad Zarif and will continue to do so, stressing the need to maintain communication channels in the current situation."

The European Union has previously stated that cooperation with the Iranian foreign minister will continue for two reasons: first, that he is the top diplomat of the Iranian government, and second, for maintaining diplomatic relations with Tehran.

The US government on Wednesday, July 31, imposed sanctions on the Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The US move simply ratchets up tensions and effectively closes the door to all forms of diplomacy.

Many countries, international organizations and international media have opposed the slapping of sanctions on Zarif, saying this US move is illogical, unhelpful, unlikely to resolve anything, and would only heighten tensions further. 101/211/216
