Beijing (IP) – China has strongly urged the European Union to abandon “baseless accusations” following the bloc’s recent sanctions on several Chinese companies. The call came from Lin Jian, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Iran Press/Asia: In response to the EU’s move to freeze assets and impose travel bans on officials from targeted Chinese firms, Lin firmly denounced the sanctions as unjustified and lacking legal grounds.

China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that are imposed without a basis in international law or authorization from the United Nations Security Council, Lin stated. He emphasized that Beijing considers the EU’s actions unfair and reiterated that the Chinese government will take “necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies.”

The EU Council announced the new wave of sanctions on Monday, marking a significant escalation in tensions. European officials explained that the measures aim to reduce China’s alleged support for Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
