Dominic Raab will take over as Prime Minister if Boris Johnson is struck down by coronavirus, Number 10 has confirmed.

Iran PressEurope: There had been newspaper speculation over the past days about who would take charge if Boris Johnson contracted the virus that has been sweeping the world.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman made clear that if Boris Johnson was stricken with Covid-19, Dominic Raab - who as well as being Foreign Secretary is also First Secretary of State - would temporarily replace him.

The spokesman said: "The Prime Minister is well. The Foreign Secretary is the First Secretary of State [and would replace him if he were ill]."

Boris Johnson has no symptoms of Covid-19, while Dominic Raab has twice tested negative for the virus after being seen coughing in the British House of Commons.

The Downing Street spokesman added that the PM could also hand to other ministers' key responsibilities if Dominic Raab himself caught the virus.

He said: "The Prime Minister has the power to delegate responsibility to any of his ministers, but for now it is the Prime Minister and then the Foreign Secretary."

Two senior Number 10 officials were reported to have caught the virus or be self-isolating over fears they might have contracted it.

According to the latest statistics, more than 378,000 people worldwide have been infected with the coronavirus, of which 16,000 have died and more than101,000 have recovered.
