The sixteenth summit of BRICS leaders commenced on Wednesday, October 23, with the participation of member country leaders, including Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, Russia.

Iran Press/Europe: The event began with a group photo of the heads of state, followed by official meetings where representatives from member nations—including Iran, Russia, Brazil, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia—engaged in both limited and broad discussions regarding the summit's agenda.

Opening remarks were made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who welcomed the leaders to the summit. Iran, having joined BRICS at the beginning of 2024 (January 2024), is participating for the first time as a full-fledged member.

President Pezeshkian is expected to articulate Iran's perspectives on enhancing interaction and cooperation within BRICS, as well as engage in discussions with various leaders about strengthening bilateral relations and mutual interests.

The main topic of the summit has been identified as enhancing multilateralism for equitable global development and security. According to a foreign policy advisor to the Russian president, delegates will discuss regional conflict resolution, financial interactions within BRICS, and potential scenarios for increasing membership.

This official also indicated that discussions will include international cooperation among BRICS nations and the current state of financial collaboration between member countries. Furthermore, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that issues related to Gaza and Lebanon will be part of the consultations and included in the final document of the summit.

The BRICS Plus meeting, featuring leaders from BRICS countries and interested partner nations, is scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2024.
