Iran Press- Iran’s Wushu athlete Erfan Ahangarian defeated his Chinese opponent 2-1 at the final showdown of Wushu men’s Sanda 60kg event of 2018 Asian Games currently underway in Indonesia.
Ahangarian’s medal was Iran’s first gold in the Wushu competitions of the 2018 Asian Games, and the eighth gold medal so far collected by Iranian athletes participating in the international tournament.
His gold came as the Iranian athlete showed great sportsmanship during his semi-final bout against the Indian opponent Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh on Wednesday, when he picked up the badly injured Surya and took him to the sideline of the mat after the match instead of celebrating his win, MNA reported.
Ahangarian had defeated opponents from Thailand, Yemen, South Korea and India before facing off the Chinese athlete in the final bout.
In Taekwondo, Mirhashem Hosseini has grabbed Iran’s 5th Gold Medal at the 2018 Asian Games, with a fabulous 17 to 11 victory over his Chinese rival.
The 2018 Asian Games kicked off on August 18 in Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang and will wrap up on September 2. Iran is participating in the event with 378 athletes.
Hosseini was 5 to 4 down in the 1st round, but made an astonishing comeback in the 2nd round to go 8-6 ahead. He kept the momentum in the 3rd to outclass his Chinese opponent, Zhao Shuai, 17 to 11 to win.
Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers bag two gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games underway in Indonesia on Wednesday.
Iranian Greco-Roman styler Mohammadali Geraei snatched a gold medal after he overpowered Akzhol Makhmudov of Kyrgyzstan 7-3 in the final bout of the 77-kilogram weight category at Assembly Hall, Jakarta, Press TV reported.
Additionally, Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Hossein Nouri triumphed over Rustam Assakalov of Uzbekistan in the title challenge of the 87-kilogram weight class, and picked up the gold medal.
Iran’s wrestlers also pocketed 2 bronze medals in Greco-Roman style on Tuesday. In the 60-kg category, Mehrdad Mardani took the third place with an 8-nothing win over his Uzbek opponent, Islomjon Bakhramov.
And in the 67-kg category Mohammadreza Geraei overpowered Hung Yinghua from Chinese Taipei 11-nothing to wrap up the victory in less than a minute.
Hassan Yazdani (86kg), Alireza Karimi (97kg) and Parviz Hadi (125kg) won three gold medals.
Iran has competed at the Asian Games since the first event in 1951 Delhi, and the best achievement was in 1974, when the country hosted the event in Tehran, by ranked second with the acquisition of 36 gold, 28 silver and 17 bronze medals. At the last edition in Incheon, the country wrapped up its campaign with 57 medals in all - 21 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze
And so far in the 2018 Asian Games Medal Standings: China sit at the top with 37 gold and a total of 81 medals. Japan, South Korea are 2nd to 3th respectively, while Iran stand in 4th place with 7 gold medals, 3 silvers and 6 bronze.
