Armenian opposition leader calls on people to protest, after lawmakers elected Serzh Sargsyan as the new prime minister.

Addressing a large crowd of supporters at Republic Square on Tuesday, Armenian opposition leader, MP Nikol Pashinyan also said "Serzh Sargsyan has been the president of this country for two terms and the problems of the people have not been solved.  We should not allow such a situation to continue".

Pashinyan’s remarks came as the Armenian lawmakers have elected the country's new prime minister during a special session of the parliament.

In Armenia, demonstrators converged in their thousands to Yerevan city center, as lawmakers elected former President Serzh Sargsyan to be the country's new prime minister on Tuesday. But the demonstrators have not descended on Yerevan to congratulate the longtime leader on his new role.

In 2015, Armenian voters approved a constitutional referendum that made a significant change to the country's national power structure. With the change, the office of the president was stripped of many of its powers — even as the power of the prime minister was given a substantial boost.

The amendment, renders the presidency "largely ceremonial".

However, many critics have viewed the 2015 constitutional changes simply as a mechanism for SerzhSargsyan to remain in power once he was term-limited out of the presidency.
