Prime Minister Greenland responded to US President-elect Donald Trump's suggestion that Washington should buy Arctic territory, saying "This region is not for sale, it is open for cooperation."

Iran PressEurope: "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Trump said in a post to Truth Social on Howery.

A day after Trump's comments, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland."

"We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom," he added.

Greenland, a self-governing territory under the Danish monarchy, maintains its parliament and administration while electing two members to Denmark’s Folketing, or parliament.

On Monday Denmark backed Greenland's response to Trump.

In response to a question concerning Trump's comment, the Danish Prime Minister’s Office said "In a complex security political situation as the one we currently experience, transatlantic cooperation is crucial."

The office also noted that the Danish government is looking forward to welcoming the new American ambassador, saying they are also looking forward to working with the new US administration.

Trump's recent statements regarding Canada and the Panama Canal have also caused discomfort in two neighboring countries of the United States.

Trump had threatened to take back the Panama Canal due to "ridiculous" fees being charged to pass through, bemoaning that the US "foolishly gave it away."

Trump has accused Panama of imposing exorbitant costs on US shipping and the Navy in the Panama Canal.

"If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States of America, in full, quickly and without question," Trump told a crowd of supporters at Turning Point USA's AmericaFest in Arizona.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump referred to Canada as the 51st state, though a Canadian official later characterized his remarks as a joke.

Panama's president Jose Raul Mulino said Sunday that the canal will "continue to be in Panamanian hands".

Every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belong to Panama and "will remain so," and "the sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable," Mulino said in a social media video post.

"We'll see about that!," Responding to the Panamanian President, the US President-elect said.
