Iran marks the 29th anniversary of liberation and repatriation of its prisoners-of-war.

Iran Press/Iran news: Saturday 17 August 2019 is a national day of celebration in Iran. It was exactly 29 years ago on this day that Iranian prisoners-of-war returned home to a joyous and tumultuous welcome after spending many years in the dungeons of the former Ba'athist regime of Iraq.

Iran's first vice president Es'haq Jahangiri in a tweet on Saturday paid homage to all the prisoners freed on this day and commemorated the selfless and genuine sacrifices of the Iranian people, their national unity, cohesion, and the responsible manner in which all policy-makers of those days behaved, Iran Press reported.

Jahangiri tweeted: "17 August 1990 was the day in which the proud Iranian prisoners-of-war, after enduring many years of incarceration, returned home to Iranian soil. On that day, the Iranian people witnessed and experienced a fruit of peace, the release of their sons and brothers from the horrid dungeons of the former Ba'athist regime, warmly embracing all those who were liberated on that day."

Jahangiri added: "The lessons we learned after the war were just as important as the lessons we learned during eight years of sacred defense. All Iranians must study and learn the details of war and peace during the first decade of the Islamic Revolution. I congratulate all those former POWs who were liberated and their honorable families. Felicitations to all of them on this joyous day." 101/211
