France continuing efforts to defuse US-Iran tensions

France president has sent his senior diplomat to Tehran to defuse increasing tensions between the US and Iran.

Iran Press/Europe: The France President Emanuel Macron's adviser, Emmanuel Bonne, holds 'high-level meetings' in Tehran with the aim of contributing to the de-escalation of tensions in the region', Rappler reported.

Emmanuel Macron sent his top diplomatic adviser to Iran as part of European efforts to defuse tensions between Tehran and Washington, the French presidency said Thursday, June 20.

Macron's office refused to say whom Bonne met, adding only that he left Tehran on Wednesday evening.

In late April, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif identified the B-Team as US National Security Advisor John Bolton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The US has been pursuing a policy of 'maximum pressure' against Iran under president Trump, and John Bolton is acting as Trump's top security aide.

The policy has seen Washington reinstating draconian economic sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic, and dispatching an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber taskforce, and an amphibious assault ship to the region. Washington has been enlisting the assistance of its regional allies in implementing the policy
