Tehran set for elections to choose City Council assistants

Voting begins today Friday July 26, 2019 for the elections to choose the Fifth term of Assistants to the Islamic City Council of Tehran.

Iran Press/Iran news: According to secretary of the executive committee of Tehran’s City Council Hamid Tahayei the elections will be held in 352 constituencies on Friday.  

Tahayei said polls will be opened from 8 am to 4 pm at 1,700 polling stations where voters will cast their votes to some 7,000 fully electronic ballot boxes used for the first time in the local elections.

He said that a total of 12,328 candidates had registered for the election, some 12,030 of them have been qualified to run in the elections.

For the next term, nine main members and four successive members will be elected to each of Tehran's neighborhoods.

Some 56 candidates have been disqualified from running in the elections and the rest have been removed due to incomplete documents, he added.

The official said that final results are likely to be announced on Saturday since the voting system is fully electronic.

The City Council of Tehran presides over the Iranian capital, elects mayors and decides budgets of the Municipality of Tehran.

"Association of Assistants to the Islamic City Council of Tehran" is a non-governmental, decentralized, non-political, voluntary, cooperative and autonomous, self-governing, community-based organization. 

The assistants are aware of the laws and regulations of the Islamic Council of Tehran and follow the demands of the people.

By creating a neighborhood database and identifying opportunities, population, capabilities and potential problems, they develop community culture among neighborhood residents, reduce costs and solve project implementation problems.

Nearly 17 years have passed since the activities of the association in Tehran.
