Qom (IP) - Muslims in holy city of Qom, south of the Iranian capital, observed the Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Destiny, which is considered the holiest night of the year.

Iran Press/Iran News: People from all walks of life gathered inside the holy mausoleum of Hazrat Masouemh (SA), the daughter of the 7th Shia Imam, in Qom on Friday night to mark the event, which is believed to be the night when the first verses of the holy Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) some 14 centuries ago.

They recite the holy Qu’ran, hold vigils until dawn in prayers and supplications and ask God to forgive them for their sins. Muslims also have special wishes and prayers on this special night, Iran Press reported.

The prayers also commemorated the anniversary of the day when the first Shia Imam, Imam Ali (PBUH) was struck with a poisoned sword in the 40th year of Hijri, in the early hours of the morning of 19th Ramadan.

Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (PBUH), martyred on the 21st day of the holy fasting month of Ramadan some 14 centuries ago.

In Islamic teaching, this night represents a great opportunity for Muslims during the fasting month of Ramadan to dedicate a great deal of their time to praying and focusing on the spiritual aspects of life. 101/104
