Iran Press/ America: "It’s been two years since the US exited the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), we will exercise all diplomatic options to ensure the UN arms embargo is extended," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Referring to the anniversary of the withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, the US Secretary of State also claimed that the Americans and the West Asian region are at greater peace after this action.
The UN Security Council's anti-Iran arms embargo was imposed in 2006 and 2007 to ban arms sales to Iran and arms exports from this country.
The US officials claimed that they have the right to use what they call their legal right to extend Iran's arms embargo as members of UNSCR 2231 or the UN Security Council.
Under the resolution, an arms embargo on Iran, as well as an arms export ban, is set to lift Oct. 18. The resolution also said travel restrictions on officials and entities involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs will expire in October.
Iran has vehemently rejected this self-proclaimed interpretation of the United States, stressing that the United States has ended its participation in the JCPOA in accordance with its President's explicit statement.
Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on his Twitter page on Tuesday that US Secretary of State pretends UNSCR 2231 is independent of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and advised him to read the UN Resolution.
“US has NO standing,” Zarif said.
US President Trump unilaterally withdrew the United States from the Iran Nuclear Deal in 2018 and has re-imposed harsh and illegal sanctions against the West Asian country.
However, a renewal of the arms embargo is likely to meet opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power in the Security Council.
