Iran Press/Asia: Speaking at the inauguration of the Ferdowsi Hall at Yerevan State University, Sobhani emphasized Iran's commitment to strengthening relations with Armenia across various sectors.
Addressing the contentious issue of the Zangezur corridor, which has sparked tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Sobhani stated that during a recent meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Iran's Supreme Leader, the Iranian position was clearly articulated: any corridor that infringes upon Armenia's territorial integrity is unacceptable. "This corridor is against the interests of Armenia and the Islamic Republic of Iran," he asserted.
The ambassador referenced a recent tweet from Iran's Foreign Minister, which reinforced that the territorial integrity of neighboring countries is a "red line" for Iran. He dismissed any illusions regarding the corridor's implications, stating that such dreams would not materialize.
In response to comments from Armenia's Deputy Foreign Minister about the control of the route between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, Sobhani stressed that security and crossings must remain under Armenian control. He clarified that while commercial companies may operate within Armenia, the oversight of these routes must be managed by Armenian authorities.
Sobhani concluded by indicating that the date for the upcoming 3+3 format meeting, which aims to address issues in the South Caucasus, will be announced through diplomatic channels.
This statement reflects Iran's ongoing commitment to supporting Armenia amid regional tensions and its desire to maintain stability in the South Caucasus, highlighting the complexities of geopolitical interests in the region.
