Mashhad (IP) - Aerial imagery showed the holy shrine of the eighth Shia Muslim Imam, Ali ibn Musa al-Reza (PBUH), in the city of Mashhad, northeastern Iran, on the occasion of birth anniversary of 12th Shia Imam on Sha'ban 15th on the lunar calendar.

Iran Press/Iran News: Every year, simultaneously with the arrival of mid-Sha'ban, the birthday anniversary of the Twelfth and last Shia Imam, Imam Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance), millions of Iranians hold ceremonies to celebrate the occasion across Iran and in some Muslim countries, especially in the holy city of Mashhad provincial center of Northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi, at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (peace be upon him), the eighth Shiite Imam.

This year, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, no celebrations are held on the occasion of mid-Sha'ban, and all kinds of gatherings are prohibited.

Who is Imam Mahdi?

Imam Mahdi (May God Hasten His Reappearance) was born on the 15th day of the month of Sha’ban on the lunar calendar around 1,200 years ago.

Shias believe that Imam Mahdi is the prophesied redeemer who will bring peace and justice to the world.
