Iran Press/ Africa: Non-Muslim attacks, killing many people in the Fulani Community, in Ghana, have raised concerns about the maltreatment being imposed on Fulani settlers.
President of the Council of Fulani Chiefs of Ghana Alhaji Iddrisu Mohammed Bingle extended regret over the death of more than 50 Fulani people between 2021 and 2022 without any reason or provocation.
In an exclusive interview with Iran Press at his office in Accra, the Fulani chief called the violence among Fulani and some other people in some parts of the country as an "attack on Islam."
He further added that he has not seen anywhere in the world where two people committed a crime and then the whole community was held responsible to pay for the crime.
Later, Alhaji Iddrisu says they burnt our houses, our mosques, and our schools which does not give peace to our people while saying prays.
The Chief added that attackers further attacked innocent children and also their animals.
He referred to the attacks and stressed the seriousness of the situation saying if they report to the authorities about attacks, the expected punishment is not going to be given and Fulani people have just been treated like animals.
Over the years, there have been several reports of violence between Fulani people and residents of various regions in Ghana.
The Chief, in the end, asked for international help and the action of the Ghana government to prevent such calamities where non-Muslims attack nomadic Fulani Muslims in Ghana.
Fulani, consisting of 99.9% Muslims, have been living in Ghana for generations but they are still not accepted among local communities and are deprived of certain services, including the citizenry, political life, and health services. Most Fulani children are not undertaking formal education, they attend the local Islamic schools where Quran and Islam are being taught.
The Fulani are a dispersed group of both nomadic herders and farmers living in both rural and urban parts of Ghana.
