Iran Press/Middle East: Meeting with Adil Abdul Mahdi, new Prime Minister of Iraq on Thursday, Iraj Masjedi, the Islamic Republic of Iran ambassador to Baghdad announced Tehran's support for the political process in Iraq.

Congratulating Abdul Mahdi's appointment as Iraq's prime minister,  Masjedi emphasised the necessity of developing Iran-Iraq relations during his term as prime minister.

Along with other Iranian consuls in Iraq, Masjedi met the newly-elected president of the country, Barham Saleh, in Baghdad on Sunday to discuss relations between the two states under the new leadership.   

Referring to the close cultural roots and long standing relationships between the two countries,  ambassador Iraj Masjedi extended congratulations on behalf of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and wished him success in performing his duties.

For his part the new Iraqi president, Barham Saleh called for easing of tensions in the region, and for further development and expansion of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
