Iran's marine official said on Monday that US sanctions will have no effect on Caspian Sea littoral states cooperation and policies.

Iran Press/Iran NewsIran's director general for maritime affairs, Nader Pasande in an exclusive interview with Iran Press International news agency explained that Iran's maritime industry may use some of standards defined and regulated by IMO ( International maritime organization). However; some of its rules could not be applicable to the Caspian Sea due to its unique geographical position and its natural environment.

Referring to the Caspian Sea as the one surround by 5 countries, the Iranian top Marine official explained that some other rules and regulations agreed, accepted and confirmed by all these countries in the forms of MoU will be needed in the regional and local level.

Being asked about the fact that whether US unilateral sanctions against Iran would possibly have some negative effects on 5 littoral states of the Caspian sea, Pasande said that It will not have any effect on those countries.

Iran's maritime official who was speaking at the sideline of the 4th protocol meeting on Caspian Sea maritime safety which has kicked off in Tehran on Monday, called the event and the similar meetings together with attendance of all 5 countries littoral states, as a proof that shows US unilateral sanction will have no effect on all of these members and their contribution to the common regional and local decisions. He concluded that these meetings could provide the chance for reaching needed agreement and MoU that will be the key to meet common regional needs beside the application of IMO standards.

Representatives of Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan are participating in the protocol meeting. The meeting will run until Dec 11.

The meeting participants will discuss improving safety of vessels in the Caspian Sea, mechanisms in search and rescue operations, oversight and inspection of vessels, as well as protection of the marine environment.

The deputy director for the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran (PMO), Hadi Haghshenas said, "This meeting is aimed at ensuring the safety of the Caspian Sea, as well as the preservation of its environment." 105/203
