US to relaunch a new high-tech Cold War-era Star Wars: Russia

Russia says new US missile strategy will lead to arms race in space amounts to a high-tech relaunch of the 'Cold War-era Star Wars programme'.

Iran Press/Europe: Russia’s foreign ministry in a statement on Friday said the US new missile strategy will lead to a dangerous arms race and called it a confrontational action.

According to Reuters, Russian foreign ministry warned in the statement that "US missile program would deal a blow to already-fragile international stability".

Russia’s foreign ministry call on Washington to think again and engage with Russia in constructive talks about the nuclear arms balance “before it’s too late”.

In October 2018, US president Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the 'Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force, or INF Treaty, an agreement that eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons from US and Russian arsenals.

INF treaty

The INF treaty, signed in 1987 between President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev, prohibited the development and deployment of midrange nuclear-tipped missiles.

The agreement forced each country to dismantle more than 2,500 missiles with ranges of 310 to 3,420 miles from their arsenals.

In short, the treaty has kept nuclear-tipped missiles off the European continent for the last 30 years.

On 21 October 2018, Russia said it would be forced to respond in kind to restore the military balance with the United States if US President Donald Trump carried through on a threat to quit a nuclear arms treaty and began developing new missiles.

Meanwhile Trump reiterated that the United States would build up its nuclear arsenal. Trump's remark had a warning of “military-technical” retaliation from Moscow.
