Iran and India officials discussed the latest developments in bilateral banking and trade relations between the two countries.

Iran Press/ Asia: The Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Abdolnaser Hemmati met with the India’s Ambassador to Iran Saurabh Kumar to discuss the latest developments in bilateral banking and trade relations, Iran Press reported.

In the meeting, which took place in Tehran on Monday afternoon, Saurabh Kumar, India’s Ambassador to Iran said that the financial mechanism between the two countries is prepared and the two sides will carry out their business and banking operations in the coming days on the basis of the exemptions received by the Indian government.

Also in the meeting, the two sides discussed facilitating banking affairs and the implementation of India's investment in Iranian port of Chabahar.

That's while, in order to save 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), Europe established an independent financial mechanism with Iran.

After announcing new round of US sanctions against Iran's oil, banking and shipping industries, Europe issued a statement highlighting significant progress in establishing an independent financial mechanism with Iran, which show importance of EU efforts to trade with Iran in the framework of  the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Germany and France have agreed on December to host the EU’s promised trade mechanism aimed at facilitating trade with Iran in the face of US sanctions.

The related company will be settled in France, and will be chaired by the German side.

Austria, Luxembourg and Belgium, the other potential candidates, had refused to host the SPV in fear of US reprisals.

Nine countries are interested in joining the Special Purpose Vehicle, including Italy, Spain, Austria and the Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg), the report added.

Also, ambassador of India bid farewell to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammd Javad Zarif at the end of his mission in Tehran on Dec 31, 2018.
