The Iranian Foreign Minister had a long meeting and discussion with Syria's President in Damascus on Tuesday.

Iran Press/Middle East: During the meeting, the two sides conferred over the Astana-format Syrian settlement talks and bilateral agreements signed during Assad’s visit to Iran in February.

Heading a high-ranking diplomatic delegation, Zarif arrived in Damascus earlier on Tuesday, at the invitation of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

Mohammad Javad Zarif said upon arrival in the Syrian capital while speaking to reporters on Tuesday that the trip is aimed at discussing America's unlawful and hostile moves against both Tehran and Damascus with senior Syrian officials.

Zarif noted Trump’s unlawful recognition of Israel's 'sovereignty' over the occupied Golan Heights, which legally belongs to Syria, Trump's recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the Israeli regime's capital, and the US’ “unprecedented, illegal and extremely stupid” move to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization as the main topics of discussion with senior Syrian officials.

The top diplomat is also scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Imad Khamis and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem.

Zarif will leave Syria for Turkey next to hold separate talks with the country’s senior officials. His visit to Turkey comes a week before the Astana-format Syrian settlement talks, which will be held in the Kazakh capital on 25-26 April, and attended by Iranian, Turkish and Russian officials. 104/211
