Port city of Bandar Abbas (IP) - Millions of desert locusts are currently moving towards the southern port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan province, threatening agriculture and food security in southern Iran.

The crop protection officer for the southern province of Hormozgan, Hamid Dowlati has warned that several massive swarms of locust, each one made up of millions of desert locusts, started to move on Wednesday morning from Haji Abad county towards the city of Bandar Abbas, the provincial capital. Dowlati went on to stress that two airplanes are currently being used to spray insecticide from the air in a bid to limit the spread of the locusts and to combat this dangerous infestation which is threatening farmers, agriculture and food security throughout southern Iran.

According to an Iran Press report, the crop protection manager went on to stress that some 300 experts and technicians are involved in the campaign against locust infestation. Earlier, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) had warned about the dangerous potential outbreak of the desert locust from Saudi Arabia to six southern provinces of Iran, including the southern Hormozgan and Sistan-Balouchestan provinces.

Furthermore, FAO has called the spices as the real pest for the agricultural industry which can be threatening to the food security of the countries in the world including Iran.
