Tehran (IP) - Iran's President Hassan Rouhani officially welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iran's President Hassan Rouhani officially welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo at Sadabad Palace in north Tehran. The national anthems of the two countries were played before the two high-ranking officials, Iran Press reported.

There were some mounted guards of honour present at the event. Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo arrived in Tehran on Wednesday afternoon to begin a historic trip to the Middle Eastern country. Abe becomes the first Japanese head of state to visit Iran in the past four decades.

Prime Minister Abe is set to hold talks with both the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani. He is expected to try to mediate escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. Officially, Japan and Iran are marking the 90th anniversary of their diplomatic relationship this year.
